Free speech / regular and irregular

SO today I thought I would talk about free speech. I mean is it truly free. To me it seems like everyone is so touchy. People are taking offense to other people personal opinions.
For example the other day in my Sociology class a male student said that he didn't like when people who weren't born in Mexico called themselves Mexican American. Then in the back of the class every one started to hear this female student get angry as if he didn't like the fact that she called herself Mexican American. This started an argument between the angry female student and the other female student who was just trying to defend the male student. As curse words started to flow out of there mouth they began to get more and more angry. This is college and they really shouldn't be arguing like this, so me and my other classmates tried to calm the situation. I told the original female student to calm down and that the class was an open forum and the male student was just stating his own personal opinion and that she is entitled to disagree with him but she doesn't have to fight with him just because she doesn't agree. I don't know if she listened to me or if it just went in one ear and out the other. But I said what I said.
This started too make me think. Why do we take other personal opinions and as if they were directly pointed at us. Like now and days it seems like TV and Radio personalities are getting fired left and rite because they said something that wasn't politically correct. We have become a society of touchy people. We never look at things with an open mind. As a society we tend to shun whatever is different. Now and days people tend to see people that are different as crazy or mentally ill. "why else would they do or say such things".
But have we made ourselves this way. I mean back in the day going against the grain was wearing pants if your a girl or sleeping in the same bed before marriage. Now all that stuff is on television and it's the considered normal. But since going against the grain has become normal and commonly seen, has being normal and not going against the regulars of society has become being defiant. Basically I think that what used to be considered irregular is now regular and what used to be regular has now become irregular. Maybe that's why Miley Cyrus getting in trouble for being sexual on TV is kinda like what ever to most people my age. Seeing someone be defiant isn't news pr weird, but seeing some one be compliant is considered weird in most circle's.
Maybe we just need to open our eyes and ears and stop criminalizing people for doing what they want. Maybe we should just let each other be.
